NC Community College System, NCICU Launch Statewide Transfer Pathways Platform to Streamline Degree Completion
RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), in partnership with North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU), announced today the official public launch of NCICU Transfer Pathways, a new digital platform designed to make it easier for North Carolina community college students to transfer to participating private, nonprofit colleges and universities to complete their bachelor’s degrees.
Connecting all 58 North Carolina community colleges with 29 participating NCICU campuses, the platform provides students and academic advisors with tools to evaluate transfer credits, compare degree programs and identify clear pathways toward completing a four-year degree.
The initiative builds on the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) between the System and NCICU, strengthening collaboration between two-year and four-year institutions while helping students maximize the credits they have already earned.
“Every credit a student earns at one of our colleges should count toward where they’re headed. When credits don’t transfer, students pay for it with time and money they don’t have,” said Dr. Monty Sullivan, Acting President & CEO of the NC Community College System. “NCICU Transfer Pathways shows students the road before they start down it. That’s two- and four-year schools working together for students.”
The new platform addresses longstanding challenges surrounding credit evaluation, transfer transparency and degree planning. By providing students with a clearer understanding of how their community college coursework applies toward bachelor’s degree requirements, the initiative aims to reduce credit loss, improve transfer efficiency and support degree completion.
“NCICU Transfer Pathways is a transformative leap forward in serving students across North Carolina,” said NCICU President Dr. A. Hope Williams. “By aligning our Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) with state-of-the-art technology, we are increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of transfer planning. Students can set their path to a four-year degree with full confidence that their hard-earned credits will count.”
Developed in collaboration with technology partner Acadeum, the initiative represents a multi-year investment in expanding transfer opportunities across North Carolina. More than $2 million in philanthropic grant funding supports the development, launch and sustainability of the platform across participating independent campuses.
Major supporters include The Cannon Foundation, The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the Teagle Foundation, ECMC Foundation, the John M. Belk Endowment, the Gates Foundation and Ascendium Education Group. Lumina Foundation also provided complementary funding to support engagement among NCICU and NCCCS faculty and staff throughout the project.
Following a soft launch on September 22, the platform is now publicly available to students, academic advisors and institutional administrators statewide.
NCICU Transfer Pathways provides interactive tools designed to help students make informed decisions about their educational futures. Key features include:
- Automated Credit Evaluation: Students can see how completed community college coursework, including general education credits covered by the ICAA, applies toward degree requirements at participating four-year institutions.
- Program Search and Comparison: Students can explore academic programs, compare degree requirements and search participating colleges by location and distance.
- Digital Credit Tracking: A centralized dashboard allows students and advisors to review earned credits, monitor progress toward degree completion and identify remaining requirements.
- Direct Campus Connections: Students can save programs of interest, explore institution profiles and access college application and financial aid resources.
Together, these features provide greater transparency earlier in the transfer process, helping students understand their options before making important decisions about their educational and career goals.
The NCICU Transfer Pathways network connects North Carolina’s 58 community colleges with participating independent institutions across the state.
The platform is designed to serve a broad range of learners, including traditional transfer students, early college graduates and adults returning to higher education after completing some college coursework but not earning a degree.
Twenty-eight four-year independent colleges and universities have onboarded their program catalogs, course inventories and transfer equivalencies, creating new opportunities for students to explore bachelor’s degree pathways across North Carolina. Louisburg College, NCICU’s two-year independent institution, is also part of the network.
Participating four-year institutions include Barton College, Bennett College, Brevard College, Campbell University, Catawba College, Chowan University, Gardner-Webb University, Greensboro College, Guilford College, High Point University, Johnson C. Smith University, Lees-McRae College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Livingstone College, Mars Hill University, Meredith College, Methodist University, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Montreat College, NC Wesleyan University, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, Salem College, Shaw University, University of Mount Olive, Warren Wilson College, William Peace University and Wingate University.
The collaboration also lays the groundwork for expanded transfer functionality in the future. NCCCS and NCICU are preparing to introduce reverse transfer capabilities that would allow students who transfer before completing an associate degree to apply eligible credits earned at their four-year institution toward completing that credential at their original two-year college.
This additional functionality would create another pathway for students to earn a recognized credential while continuing their education.
